Suspect in Williamsburg Attempted Rape Turns Himself in: NYPD

A suspect wanted for allegedly attacking and attempting to rape a woman in Williamsburg on New Year’s Day is now in police custody.

Manuel Almonte, 30, turned himself in at around 8 a.m. this morning, according to an NYPD spokesperson, hours after police released surveillance footage in connection to the case.

Almonte allegedly followed a 26-year-old woman to the first-floor landing of an apartment building near South 2nd Street and Havemeyer St. at around 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 1.

He then punched the woman in the back of the head before getting on top of her and trying to pull down her underwear.

The 26-year-old fought back, and the assailant then fled the scene, heading down South 2nd Street towards Marcy Avenue.

Almonte now faces  a slew of charges including attempted rape, burglary, sex abuse, forcible touching and harassment.
