NYPD: Thief steals over $10,000 in bikes from Williamsburg residential building

September 15, by Nathaly Pesantez

Three bicycles with price values in the thousands have been stolen from the same bike room of a residential building in Williamsburg, according to police.

The burglary pattern began on July 1 at 9:00pm, when the thief went into the bike room of a building just off the Williamsburg Bridge near Berry St. and S 5th St., and stole a Trek 1000 road bike along with a specialized Langster bicycle. Both bikes combined are worth $2,100, police said.

In another incident on Sept. 3, the thief entered the same bike room just after 3:00 am and stole a Low bicycle worth approximately $9,000.

The thief escaped both times to unknown locations, according to police.

The NYPD has released a video of the suspect who can be seen lowering a bike from a rack into the floor. He is described as male, approximately 6 feet tall , and wearing dark pants, hoodie sweatshirt, and dark sneakers with light bottom trim, according to police. The suspect also has a beard and goatee.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS or for Spanish 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).

How did he gain access into the building and then to the bike room? Inside job? Why was the bike in the video not secured or was it? The video only shows the man taking the bike down and not cutting any locks or cables. As a bike owner myself, I know that you do not leave your bike unsecured anywhere in NYC. Regardless of the type of neighborhood or building you happen to be in. There are crooks everywhere and even “victims” of crimes have been proven to be the criminals themselves for the purpose of fraudulent financial gain. To the victims, I feel for you. To the thief, I hope you are caught in the act and ripped apart. I’m just sayin’.
