Longtime Williamsburg institution Mugs Alehouse will serve its last drink later this month.

The bar, which has been serving up craft beers on tap since 1992 at the corner of Bedford and N. 10th, will shut its doors on June 22.

Owner Ed Berestecki, who manages the alehouse with his wife, says that after 26 and a half years of running the bar, he and his wife have decided to take a step back from the demanding work.

“It’s been a long haul for my wife and I and [we] have been mulling it over for a while,” Berestecki said. “It’s time, we’re both in our 50s…and we just don’t have the energy to dedicate the time.”

Berestecki says that once the bar closes up shop, they plan to spend more time with their four daughters.

Berestecki said he isn’t sure who will take over the Mugs Alehouse space.

“I would love for it to be something involved with craft beer, because that was our claim to fame and we were labeled as a pioneer in craft beer in North Brooklyn especially,” Berestecki said.” I would love for someone to take the baton and run with it.”

Mugs Alehouse is not the only longstanding neighborhood bar to either shut down or announce its impending closure in recent months. Rosemary’s Greenpoint Tavern and The Abbey both closed down in February of this year, soon followed by Enid’s in March.

Very dad, while we live in California we have visited New York on many occasions. Mugs has always been a daily respite. The owner, Ed, is a great guy and we are happy to call him our friend. We made friends with two regulars and all the bartenders. We will miss Mugs.

I wish someone would take it over and keep it exactly the same.

I have so many memories of Mugs…
