Council Member Stephen Levin, in conjunction with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, will be hosting a rain barrel giveaway next month.

On Saturday June 1, residents of Council District 33 will be able to pick up a free 55-gallon plastic rain barrel at McCarren Park.

The event will take place at the Demonstration Garden, located on Leonard Street near Manhattan Avenue, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Residents who want to guarantee themselves a rain barrel will need to preregister by filling out an online form.

Barrels that are not claimed by 1 p.m. will be given out on a first-come first-serve basis.

The barrels, which attach to rain gutters to collect and store the water, are intended to help residents cut down on water use. The rainwater that is collected can be used for jobs around the house, saving the use of fresh water.

A similar event, also hosted by Levin, will be held on the same day at Borough Hall Plaza.

Be careful with these. I had a version of it many yrs. ago to water my garden and it not only collected mosquitos (even with the lid on) but dead vermin looking to get a drink.
