Greenpoint Bar Hosting Pro-Aperol Spritz “Rally” Tonight

The Springs’ Aperol Spritz. (The Springs)

May 17, 2019 By Laura Hanrahan

A bar in Greenpoint is hosting a pro-Aperol spritz event tonight for lovers of the classic summer drink in response to the now infamously scathing review of the cocktail in the New York Times.

The Springs, located at 224 Franklin St, is inviting fans of the mixed drink to rally together while sipping on the cocktail, which will be served at a discount, from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. this evening.

The Palm Springs-themed bar, that features an expansive resort-like patio, will be serving up their signature Aperol spritz slushie, as well as the classic version of the drink, for $10—a $3 discount for the usual menu price. Supporters who come wearing orange will get an additional $2 off.

The first 50 people to order a drink will receive Aperol-branded sunglasses.

The New York Times article, published on May 9, received widespread condemnation after lovers of the citrusy drink came out in droves, using social media to bash the newspaper’s critique. In the article, writer Rebekah Peppler likened the cocktail, made with prosecco, soda water, and Aperol, to a “Capri Sun after soccer practice on a hot day,” and “not in a good way.”

Names big and small came out to support the drink, including celebrity chef Alex Guarnaschelli who called the cocktail “amazing.”
