The annual Dime McCarren 5K and 10K race is returning this weekend for the seventh year in a row.

On Saturday, May 4, runners and walkers will take to the streets of North Brooklyn in one of two races that will circle the Greenpoint/Williamsburg border.

The race will kick off at 9 a.m. in front of P.S. 17, located on N 4th Street, between Roebling Street and Driggs Avenue. Runners will head up to Kent Avenue, merging onto West Street before taking a right turn onto Greenpoint Avenue. They will then head down Manhattan Avenue, going south to Bayard Street, before looping back around to the finish line outside P.S. 17.T

Runners competing in the 10K race will complete two laps of the route. There are currently over 800 runner and walkers signed up to compete, according to race organizers.

A free Jr. Jedi decathlon for kids will be held alongside the race in celebration of International “May the Fourth be With You” Day. Children will participate in 10 different Star Wars themed activities, including lightsaber limbo and Yoda yoga. Over 1,200 families have already registered their kids to participate.

The Star Wars fun will also extend to the runners and walkers competing in the race, with an award going out to the participant with the best Star Wars attire.

The event is sponsored by Williamsburg-based Dime Community Bank, which has served as the title sponsor since 2016.

Money raised from the event will go towards local nonprofit St. Nicks Alliance, who will use the money to fund summer camp, educational, and recreation activities for youths in the area. In the past, the funds have gone towards admission to local state parks, art supplies, museum trips, and school supplies.

Those interested in running can register online or in person on race day.
